Team Liv-Plantur’s Stultiens and Mackaij take 2nd, 3rd at 947 cycle race

Pro Team Liv-Plantur took second and third in a fiercely contested women’s race at the Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge in Johannesburg on Sunday, November 15.

Sabrina Stultiens, 22, took silver (2:34:58) ahead of her team mate Floortje Mackaij, 19, in third (2:35:04). They finished behind first-placed Team Bigla’s Ashleigh Moolman Pasio, 29, from SA.

Three pro international women’s teams participated in the race for the first time in its 19-year history. Also racing in an exclusively female peloton were top SA women’s teams and invitational teams from across Africa.

Stultiens said after the race she was “very happy”.
“This was the first race after a long period of not racing and I worked really hard.”

An elated Mackaij added: “This was a good result for the team.”

Team manager Dirk Reuling said he was extremely satisfied with the result. “We have a very long season in Europe followed by a break of about three weeks, so to achieve two podium finishes is a great achievement.”

The two other Liv-Plantur riders in the race were Kyara Stijns, 20 and Julia Soek, 24.
The four will remain in SA for a two-day training camp before flying out on November 18.

On Saturday, they donated R20 000 and kit towards the development of Zanele Mhlongo from SA’s Team Rand Water who hails from the Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy.

Team Liv-Plantur is the sister team to Team Giant Alpecin, currently ranked 10th on the UCI World Tour Ranking. Team Liv-Plantur is ranked 8th in the Women Elite UCI ranking.
