Top global cancer experts visit SA to share on integrative treatment

Two of the world’s greatest minds in cancer research, Prof Dan Burke and Dr Binu Kuruvilla (see biographies below), are to visit South Africa in April to share their experiences, knowledge and the latest developments in the field of integrative cancer prevention and treatment with local health professionals.

An integrative approach fights cancer on multiple levels, using conventional treatments like chemotherapy, radiation or surgery, in conjunction with nutritional therapy, supplementation, lifestyle review, pain management and other supportive therapies. Patients, oncologists and doctors are increasingly choosing integrative programmes to treat cancer based on improved outcomes and greater patient support during conventional therapy. Prof Burke and Dr Kuruvilla will discuss the latest in integrative prevention and treatment and the role played by salvestrols and phytonutrients found in food and nutritional support from among others, curcumin and green tea.

Professor Dan Burke has spent most of his life studying and working with cancer, its causes and detection. During the 1970s, he invented a set of biochemical tests known as the EROD (ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase) assays — the premier method of quantifying the activity of particular enzymes. These research tools are now used worldwide to facilitate scientific investigations. Prof Burke served on the faculty of the Aberdeen University medical school for nearly 20 years where he was offered a professorship. He became recognized as an expert on the metabolism, toxicity and interactions of drugs and environmental chemicals. A decade ago, his research group discovered a universal cancer marker intrinsic to cancer cells but absent from healthy tissue, stimulating important new worldwide research on cancer detection and the development of new drugs and anticancer vaccines. Prof Burke is Emeritus Professor of Pharmaceutical Metabolism at Sunderland University after serving there as Dean of Science. He co-discovered Salvestrols, a phytonutrient found in plants which assists cancer patients and which he has described as a significant breakthrough in nutrition. This discovery has been used as a basis to develop further cancer drugs. He is the Head of Research for Nature’s Defence (UK) Ltd., in Leicester, England. India’s Dr Binu Kuruvilla has a history in clinical research, new drug development, clinical trials and working with international partners in oncology, cardiovascular, metabolic, inflammatory and neurodegenerative disorders. He is currently researching BCM-95 Curcumin Extract, utilised in the food supplement Bio-Curcumin, which has been shown in studies to counter inflammation – a precursor to disease such as cancer, diabetes and heart attacks. Dr Binu Kuruvilla is the Assistant General Manager of R&D at Curegarden Bioactive Botanics, a subsidiary of Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd, India’s leading manufacturer and exporter of standardized botanical extracts for the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industry.
