Green tea boosts memory and weight loss – study
A recent study has found that green tea may help improve memory and fight obesity.
The Chinese study published in The FASEB Journal, found that the cancer-fighting and most biologically active component in green tea, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), may help improve cognitive impairment and support weight loss by alleviating high-fat and high-fructose induced insulin resistance.
Dr Xuebo Liu, who led the study, said the ancient habit of consuming green tea may be “a more acceptable alternative to medicine when… combatting obesity, insulin resistance, and memory impairment.”
Volumes of studies have noted green tea’s health benefits but the Chinese study, conducted on mice, clarifies its impact on insulin resistance and cognitive deficits, greatly strengthening many anecdotal and research-based reports on these subjects, the research journal noted.
The study also backs human trials linked to weight management which show that regular consumption of high potency green tea may contribute to less body fat, better fasting glucose and insulin levels, lower levels of “bad” cholesterol and an improvement in liver disease.
The study noted that green tea, a globally trending superfood, is grown in about 30 countries. In South Africa, scientists at Plandai Biotechnology’s Senteeko tea estate in Mpumalanga, have combined the world-first Phytophare® extraction process with the Liposome nutraceutical delivery system to produce Origine 8, one of the most potent green tea extracts in the world.
Due to this eco-friendly South African innovation, a single Origine 8 capsule delivers the benefits of up to 25 cups of green tea, provides 24-hour bio-availability and has 12-times greater absorption than other green tea extracts.
Health and wellness expert Vanessa Ascencao says in addition to helping combat obesity – which affects about 42% of SA women – Origine 8 promotes detoxification and contributes to overall improved health.
“To counter disease and improve cognitive health, strive for a balanced diet of fresh fruit and vegetables and lean protein. Drink more water, exercise daily, manage stress, reduce exposure to toxins and get enough sleep. Choose good quality herbs and supplements such as Origine 8” (see a detox video here).
Ascencao suggests the following healthy eating habits:
- Eat a salad or raw vegetables with every meal and drink lots of water as this helps counter overeating.
- Introduce a healthy eating regime gradually. Rushing may lead to binge eating or falling back into unhealthy behaviours.
- Identify unhealthy behaviours like comfort eating. Replace this with exercise, deep breathing or meditation.
- Carry healthy snacks to avoid eating junk. Don’t punish yourself for eating an unhealthy meal but pay attention to how it makes you feel compared to eating healthily.
- Create a positive mindset. Eat for good health and speak positively about yourself and your body.
Origine 8 is 100% natural, free from GMOs, soya, gluten and sugar and is available at leading health stores, pharmacies, Wellness Warehouse and Dis-Chem.
