Colour shampoo contributes to Dr Wolff Group global growth

A new caffeine-based colour shampoo by Plantur 39, popular among women seeking a deeper brown shade, has contributed to ongoing growth of German cosmeceutical manufacturer, the Dr Wolff Group, which recorded an annual global turnover of €309 in 2018.

Announcing it’s 2018 preliminary results, the group said it had grown by four percent, buoyed by new products such as Plantur 39 Colour Brown Phyto-Caffeine Shampoo and conditioner and Alpecin Hybrid Caffeine Shampoo for men with dry or itchy scalp. Both are available in SA.

“We launched Alpecin caffeine shampoo in 2004. In 2015, we sold the 100 millionth bottle and we’ve now sold another 100 million bottles in just three years – one million of which were sold in South Africa,” said group managing partner, Eduard R. Dörrenberg, adding: “The cumulative sales of shampoo to prevent hair loss is thus 200 million units and contributes to the highest annual sales in the company’s 113-year history.”

The Dr. Wolff Group noted that, after Red Bull, it was probably the largest buyer of the raw material, caffeine, used in its hair care formulations to help prevent hair loss*.

“The positive effect of caffeine for the prevention of hair loss* has been reported in the renowned British Journal of Dermatology,” the group added.

In SA, Alpecin and Plantur products are distributed by ACDOCO SA and are sold through Dis-Chem, Clicks, major pharmacies and selected Pick n Pay, Checkers and Spar stores.

Alpecin sponsors Team Katusha Alpecin which features top South African cyclist, Willie Smit and which competes in the UCI World Tour.
